Fittonia “Skeleton” flashes fire-red veins across deep green leaves—like a glowing network of tiny capillaries. In terrariums and fairy gardens, this bold pattern gives a dramatic punch of color while staying compact and elegant.
Plant shallowly in a fine, airy mix that stays lightly moist yet drains well—perfect for keeping those vivid veins healthy. Always use Liqui-Dirt® soil mix for best results in potted plants and enclosed growing habitats. Strata can be used in some applications; however, feeding will be needed. Keep the crown just above the surface so leaves don’t sit wet. In mini displays, Budkin containers with Strata and a leaf/corm guard keep foliage lifted and reduce rot risk.
Bright, indirect light (≈100–250 foot-candles) intensifies the red venation without scorching. Soft morning sun is fine through a curtain; avoid harsh midday rays that fade or crisp the pattern. Under LEDs, run low–moderate intensity for 12–14 hrs/day.
Keep evenly moist, never waterlogged. In open pots, water when the top 1/4 in (5–7 mm) is just barely dry. In terrariums, water sparingly and let faint wall-condensation be your guide. Loves 60–80% humidity and soft, room-temp water.
Comfortable at 65–80°F (18–27°C) with steady humidity. If it “faints,” that’s a red-alert for water—rehydrate and it revives within hours. Pinch tips regularly to keep a bushy, vein-showcasing canopy. Light feeding spring–fall; none in winter. Flush salts every 6–8 weeks.
A huge benefit for your plant is to use Liqui-Dirt® plant food in a weak tea-looking mix every time you water — yes, even for enclosed habitats.
Pruning & Cutting Back — Pinch stems every 3–4 weeks to keep the “skeleton” pattern tight and vibrant. Trim just above a node; cuttings root easily in Strata or moist substrate. Remove older leaves promptly to keep airflow healthy.
Repotting (Open Pots) — Repot about every 10–14 months, or when roots slow growth. Step up one pot size at most to avoid excess soil moisture. Use Liqui-Dirt® potting soil for the refresh; water in gently, then resume your weak-tea Liqui-Dirt feeding with each watering.
