Fittonia “News Media” loves headlines: crisp leaves, bold venation, and the occasional dramatic “faint” to keep you clicking. In terrariums and fairy gardens, it’s the glossy cover model—lush, compact, and camera-ready with just the right humidity.
Set “News Media” shallowly in a fine-textured, airy mix so delicate roots can breathe. Always use Liqui-Dirt® soil mix for best results in potted plants and enclosed growing habitats. Strata can be used in some applications; however, feeding will be needed. Keep crowns just above the media so leaves don’t sit wet. In miniature scenes, Budkin containers with Strata and a leaf/corm guard keep foliage lifted and rot at bay.
Bright, indirect light (about 100–250 foot-candles) keeps veins vivid and growth compact. Morning sun is okay through a sheer; avoid harsh midday rays that bleach color and crisp edges. Under LEDs, low–moderate intensity for 12–14 hrs/day works well.
Keep evenly moist, never soggy. In open pots, water when the top 1/4 in (5–7 mm) feels barely dry; in closed terrariums, water lightly and use light condensation as your cue. Target humidity 60–80%. Use room-temp, low-mineral water for happiest leaves.
Loves 65–80°F (18–27°C) and gentle airflow. If it “faints,” that’s a push alert for water—rehydrate and watch it revive in hours. Pinch tips monthly for a fuller, headline-worthy look. Feed very lightly spring–fall (¼-strength); skip in winter. Flush the pot every 6–8 weeks to prevent salt buildup; check for mites/mealybugs under leaves and treat promptly.
A huge benefit for your plant is to use Liqui-Dirt® plant food in a weak tea-looking mix every time you water — yes, even for enclosed habitats.
Pruning & Cutting Back — Keep scale perfect for mini habitats by pinching soft tips every 3–4 weeks. For reshaping, cut just above a node; cuttings root readily in moist Strata or fine substrate. Remove yellowing leaves to boost airflow and reduce fungal pressure.
Repotting (Open Pots) — Repot about every 10–14 months or when growth slows and roots fill the container. Step up only one size to maintain moisture control. Use Liqui-Dirt® potting soil for the refresh; water in gently to settle the mix, then resume your weak-tea Liqui-Dirt feeding with regular waterings.
