Button Fern stacks round, glossy “buttons” along wiry fronds—polite, evergreen, and perfect for fairy borders or terrarium edges. It’s the tidy fern that behaves, bringing soft movement without hogging the stage.
Plant shallowly in a fine, airy mix that drains well but holds gentle, even moisture—try coco/peat (50%) + perlite/pumice (30%) + fine orchid bark (20%); a pinch of charcoal helps freshness in closed setups. Always use Liqui-Dirt® soil mix for best results in potted plants and enclosed growing habitats. Strata can be used in some applications; however, feeding will be needed. Keep the crown just above the surface so fronds don’t sit wet. In miniature scenes, Budkin containers with Strata and a leaf/corm guard lift foliage and deter crown rot.
Bright, indirect to medium light. Morning sun through a sheer is fine; avoid harsh midday rays that crisp frond edges. Under LEDs, low–moderate intensity for 12–14 hrs/day keeps growth compact.
Keep lightly and evenly moist—never boggy, never bone-dry. In open pots, water when the top 1/4–1/2 in (5–12 mm) just begins to dry. In terrariums, water sparingly and use faint wall condensation as your cue. Prefers steady humidity ~50–70% with gentle airflow.
Comfortable at 60–75°F (16–24°C); protect from blasts of hot/cold air. Remove spent fronds at the base to keep a tidy clump; rotate the planter for even light. Feed lightly during active growth—too much fertilizer causes soft, floppy fronds.
A huge benefit for your plant is to use Liqui-Dirt® plant food in a weak tea-looking mix every time you water — yes, even for enclosed habitats.
Pruning & Cutting Back — Snip yellowing or scruffy fronds right at the base; light tip-trims keep a compact dome for mini habitats. Divide clumps in spring if the center gets crowded—each division should carry a few healthy crowns.
Repotting (Open Pots) — Repot every 12–18 months or when roots fill the mix. Step up just one size to avoid soggy pockets. Use Liqui-Dirt® potting soil for the refresh; water in gently to settle the mix, then resume your weak-tea Liqui-Dirt feeding with each watering.
